Teaching and Research

Teaching

Mr Williams is passionate about teaching. He is an associate of the higher education academy, having been a clinical lecturer and latterly honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham 2012-2022.

He is a senior academy tutor and the ophthalmology lead for Aston University at Wye Valley Trust and was a tutor for 4th year medical students for the University of Birmingham 2018-2021.

Geraint also teaches postgraduate ophthalmologists at all levels, including as a tutor for the acclaimed University of Ulster postgraduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery, where he leads the module on pre-operative assessment in cataract and refractive surgery.

He speaks widely to audiences in the UK and abroad and is a reviewer for numerous ophthalmic and scientific journals.

Research

External Research Links:

Geraint undertook his Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship at the University of Birmingham (Immunoregulation of Acquired Ocular Immunobullous Disease), gaining his PhD in 2012.

He subsequently worked as a clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham from 2012 to 2014.  He combined this role with fellowship training in cornea and external disease.  While undertaking his clinical fellowship at the Singapore National Eye Centre (2014-2015), he worked with Prof Jod Mehta at the Singapore Eye Research Institute.  His research focused on the role of lasers in improving outcomes in cataract and corneal surgery.
